Social Media Optimization or SMO
Social Media is a ranking factor and it has been for sometime. SMO is the counterpart of SEO but rather than Search Engine’s the target is Social Media. Its all about creating a buzz and maintaining if through organic shares and retweets.
Social Media Marketing or SMM
SMM is the SEM counterpart with Social Media. Its paid, unlike SEO and SMO.

Why does SEO, SMM, SEM or SMO matter to you? Because each is similar but only as similar as a Cardiologist is similar to an Oncologist or a Dermatologist. All are doctors but each should have specified training and experience in their field. An SEO is not necessarily the best SMO nor SEM.
They all work together on the patient but you should worry when your Dermatologist tells you he moon lights on Oncology and feels he can handle your cancer.
